Female farmer’s hopes hang on olive harvest

Um Mohammed, 55-year-old farmer, spoke to Al Mezan about the impact of the preventive measures taken in the Gaza Strip to fight Covid-19 on her life:

“I live with my husband and children in Wadi as-Salqa town. My husband and I are farmers and we both support our family of 11 members. I lost two of my sons in Israeli attacks; Mohammed was killed in the 2014 offensive on the Gaza Strip, and Jihad was killed during an Israeli escalation in 2015. The others are six sons and two daughters; one of them got married and then divorced after having her first son. All of my children are university graduates, they studied law, physiotherapy and physics, but none of them have stable work. One of my daughters is still an undergraduate and my youngest son is in school.

Our extended family owns 13 dunums of arable land shared between my husband and his brothers. Prior to the Second Intifada, we were quite well off, we owned machines and equipment to work the land which had several wells dug for irrigation of crops and trees. However, in 2000, Israeli bulldozers leveled our land completely. Since then, we couldn’t recuperate the incurred losses; we could not afford to reinvest in new tools and equipment. At the same time, our children were growing up and their needs increasing as well. So, our only option was to plant crops that don’t require a lot of money to sustain. We grew okra, jute mallow and pumpkins. My husband and I plant and harvest these crops and then sell them in the local market.

After the spread of Covid-19, everything came to a halt. We’ve become stranded, unable to move between the areas, and the markets were closed too. Had the land not been near our residence, my home would have run out of food. Recently, I ran out of tomatoes, onions and potatoes. Thus, we’ve arranged with neighbors to help one another by exchanging available produce. The lockdown has left us without any source of income and severely strapped for cash that we started to buy from the grocer’s on credit.

I bake wheat bread at home, and we only cook meals with the available produce: okra, jute mallow and pumpkin. Our only glimmer of hope is in the upcoming olive harvest season. We hope to make up our losses by selling the harvest. I wish our voice would reach officials at the Ministry of Agriculture who can help us export our crops like other farmers do.

My son was earning some money tutoring school students in physics and math but schools have been closed since March. I wish my children would secure stable jobs to live in dignity.”

Imposing lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 must go hand in hand with measures to ensure food security

E.M, 43, recounts the details of his daily struggle as one of tens of thousands of daily-wage laborers in the Gaza Strip:

“I’m married and a father of six. My oldest son is 12, and my youngest is six months old. I suffer from a spinal disc herniation which requires surgical intervention.

As a daily-wage laborer, I’m severely affected by the spread of Covid-19 in the Gaza Strip. For years, I’ve been moving from one job to another which made it difficult for me to secure my family’s basic needs even before the lockdown. In certain periods, I worked for long hours trying to make money for my family. I traveled on foot delivering newspapers for hours on end to save money on transportation. My wage from that job did not exceed 20 Shekels per day. When done, I went home to rest for some time before going to any other job I had lined up that day; I would not miss work even if I was in pain. I also worked in construction and other manual labor that my friends could arrange. I had been waiting for the conditions to change for the better, for an opportunity of a permanent job or for an assistance to create a small project.

During the past years, and despite of my circumstances, I completed my studies and graduated with a diploma in business administration hoping that I would get the chance to work in a permanent job. I always believed that these hard times were temporary. At the beginning of 2020, I lost my job as a delivery person due to the bad economic conditions which resulted in declining demand on newspapers. Losing my job was the hardest thing I had to live through. I suddenly became unable to secure my family’s basic needs. To save my family and myself form living without an income, I thought of a plan B; I borrowed some money and I set up a street stand for selling mobile phones’ accessories. I was working from 9am until 8pm, and the money I made was very little (10-15 Shekels) a day, and sometime it was even less than that. I could barely buy food for my children from that money. With the beginning of the academic semester in August, I was contemplating selling stationary from my stand. Thank God I didn’t have enough money for that, otherwise my losses would have been greater as the Ministry of Interior imposed a full lockdown due to the spread of Covid-19 to the wider population in the Gaza Strip on 24 August 2020. I’ve not worked since that day. I spent the money I saved from the stand to pay debts, and I’m having a hard time securing my family’s basic needs. Now, I only depend on the money I borrow from my friends and neighbors. I wish this crisis would end soon as it severely impacted my family.”

Female farmer facing destitution amid Covid-19 lockdown

Jawaher is a 35-year-old farmer and a mother of six. She lives in Wadi as-Salqa town with her husband, who suffers from epilepsy. She recounted the challenges she’s facing under the imposed lockdown:

I got married right after finishing high school. We live in an asbestos-roofed house which consists of two rooms, a bathroom and a small kitchen. My husband owns a small plot of land surrounded by olive trees and we grow seasonal crops. This season we planted jute mallow and okra.

Before the lockdown, I used to harvest the crops and sell them at the local market. With the money I earned, I could secure my husband’s medicine and my children’s needs.

Unfortunately, due to the spread of Covid-19 in the Gaza Strip and the ensuing lockdown, the crops are left unattended for long periods of time, which spoiled the Jute Mallow. To save the crops, I collected the okra and whatever was left of the jute mallow and stored them. But due to constant electricity shortage, I couldn’t keep the produce refrigerated. On the other hand,  I had no option but to harvest the produce since the availability of water for irrigation depends on electricity and it’s very rare to have both municipality water and electricity present at the same time.

This plot of land is our only source of income. I couldn’t just stand and watch our only source of subsistence jeopardized, so I took a risk and went out after two weeks of lockdown. I collected the crops and went to a merchant to sell them; he bought some of my produce. I thanked God I was able to buy my husband’s medicine, without which he would become erratic and would constantly screams at me and the children.

This is not the first time we experience hardship threatening our livelihood. In 2014, Israeli bulldozers leveled our land and killed five of our sheep. I did not get compensation and I still have not been able to recoup what I lost.

As olive harvest season draws closer, I still don’t know if I’ll be able to harvest my olives and sell them. I wish I could have some assistance to sell the crops before they spoil.

I have only one dream, I wish someone would knock on my door, bringing some sheep  with him as well as medicine for my husband, and have a look at my house and with a wide smile says, Jawaher, we’re here to provide you with some help”.

Gaza residents’ suffering exacerbates amid the ongoing lockdown and lack of effective social protection measures

Ismail is a 28-year-old coffee shop cashier in Gaza. He spoke to Al Mezan about his economic conditions amid the lockdown:

“I’m married and a father of one boy, I live with my parents and my sister in a house located in al-Falouja area in Jabaliya refugee camp in the North Gaza district. I work as cashier in a coffee shop in al-Sheikh Ejlein area, northwest of Gaza City.
Since the Ministry of Interior imposed a full lockdown on the Gaza Strip to limit the spread of Covid-19, I have been experiencing difficulties securing my family’s basic needs, including food and medicines, as I’m the only breadwinner in the family. My wife underwent a surgery a month ago to remove an ovarian cyst and she was prescribed monthly injections for a period of six months, each costing 600 ILS. It’s hard for me to pay for this treatment even in normal days. I’m worried that if I cannot secure my wife’s medication, the surgery may fail and my wife won’t be able to conceive ever again. In addition, my father had angina and in need of constant treatment, and my mother is diabetic and receives her medicines from the UNRWA clinic. The situation is unbearable, I have to provide my family with all their needs but I don’t have any money. I borrowed a lot of money during the lockdown, but I’m not sure I’ll able to keep providing my family with their needs in case the crisis continues. We have not received assistance from any institution since the beginning of the lockdown and were unable to obtain UNRWA’s food voucher. We are all worried about the days to come”.

The Israeli closure and electricity crisis imperil the lives of the chronically ill

Raed, 45, shares a three-room, tin-roofed house in Deir al-Balah refugee camp with his extended family of 12. His wife and three of his children suffer from chronic diseases. He spoke to Al Mezan about the hardship that the pandemic crisis has inflicted on him and his family:

“I spent most of my life working as a fisherman but the increasing attacks, arbitrary arrests, and restrictions on fishermen by the Israeli authorities coupled with diminishing financial returns forced me to seek a different occupation in 2010. I rented a small place near my house and started a sewing business with my son Mohammed who had learnt the craft.

The income was enough to cover our minimum needs, but the recent two coronavirus-induced lockdowns have drastically impacted our small business and taken a toll on our income. The first lockdown in March 2020 wasn’t as long or restrictive. We managed to go back to work, and even though we were earning less than pre-pandemic revenue, it was still enough to meet our household basic needs.

The current lockdown, though, is increasingly challenging with each passing day. Since its start in August after the first COVID-19 cases outside quarantine centers were detected, I’ve complied with the authorities’ safety guidelines and closed the business. I was also encouraged to do so for fear of my own family contracting the viral disease. My wife, Camellia, 43, suffers from diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. My 15-year-old daughter, Waad, and 23-year-old son, Mohammed, are also diabetic, and Amal, my 20-year-old daughter, has cerebral palsy. Mohammed’s wife and son also live with us.

Closing the store means losing our only means of subsistence. I can no longer provide for my family. The electricity crisis is compounding our suffering as the few hours of electricity supply daily are not enough to operate the medical bed and nebulizer Amal needs in order to stay alive. I feel helpless, and I fear losing her.

I can’t afford to buy desalinated water when the municipal water supply is delayed due to the shortage in electricity. The health risks facing my immunocompromised wife and children are growing rapidly and so is my anxiety. I have been borrowing money to put food on the table every day. I’m in desperate need of help and can’t guarantee my family’s safety in this pandemic, especially in a packed house like this.

Alternative energy sources are beyond unaffordable at this point. I implore the competent authorities and international organizations to help me install one as soon as possible. It’s the only way to care for my daughter Amal and keep her alive. I also call on the authorities to support low-income families and daily-wage laborers.”
