Protection measures must be provided for children in isolation centers, especially for those with disabilities

A kidney disease patient who is a father of three children—two of whom suffer from mental retardation—spoke to Al Mezan about his family’s experience at a COVID-19 isolation center:

“Shortly after detection of coronavirus cases in the Gaza Strip on 24 August 2020, we found out that my sister-in-law tested positive for the virus. I felt so anxious as my wife attended a wedding with her just two days before. I was too worried about my family contracting the virus, especially my disabled children, and was hesitant to ask for a COVID test from the Epidemiology Department. But eventually, I called them and the test results were positive for all of us except for my eight-year-old disabled son. We were informed that we’re all going to be transferred to an isolation center except for my son who tested  negative. I refused to leave him alone because he needs special care, so I wrote a letter to the Ministry of Health pledging to bear full responsibility for taking my son to the isolation center. The Ministry accepted and we were all transferred to the isolation center in Deir Al Balah on Thursday, 3 September 2020. The center consists of three contiguous caravans assembled to form a U-shaped structure, and in the middle,  there is a small yard surrounded by a fence. We are eight individuals in the place, the five of us my wife’s three sisters.

We arrived at the center and there were only regular supplies like bedding and blankets. There were no sanitizers, hygiene supplies, headache relievers or vitamins, and they are still not adequately provided until now. When we keep asking them for medicine, they only bring us Paracetamol. As a kidney patient, I need special care which I don’t get here. I received one phone call from a doctor when I came to the center asking me about my health condition, and a doctor visited us once and asked about the symptoms we experience. As for food, it was not sufficient at the beginning but now we are provided with three daily meals. But I still have a problem with my disabled children who don’t feel full. I talked to the center’s administration and I informed them about the necessity to increase the number of meals for my children and they approved. Children in isolation centers also need toys to play with and have some fun.

I’m personally experiencing difficulties in the center, on one hand, I’m sick and I need regular treatment, and on the other hand, my children are hyperactive and suffer from mood disorders; the small space and the hot weather make them feel nervous all the time. Due to my sickness, I need to take a number of medicines everyday which I used to bring from Al Shifa Hospital’s pharmacy on monthly basis. I have to take the medicines because otherwise I’ll experience symptoms associated with my disease such as muscle spasms resulting in inability to stand or practice my life normally. During my stay at the center, I tried to contact the hospital’s free number to provide me with the medicine, but due to the current conditions, I couldn’t get it, and this puts me in danger. I’m calling on all duty-bearers to provide adequate conditions and all the important needs for quarantined children especially those with disabilities. I’m also calling for providing medicines for patients with chronic diseases who contracted COVID-19.”

Response to the pandemic is failing Gazans who are slipping back into extreme poverty

A 40-year-old former carpenter from Gaza City spoke to Al Mezan on condition of anonymity about the pandemic’s severe impact on his family’s life:

"I live with my family of six on al-Mukhabarat Street in Gaza City. I lost my carpentry and upholstery shop to fire in 2005 and have been living in debt since then. Actually, I owe about $47,000 in overdue installments and payments to merchants and wood suppliers.

Shortly after I lost my only source of income in the fire, Israel launched its blockade on the Gaza Strip, leading to restrictions on importing material and machinery. The economic devastation that followed it imperiled many craft jobs like mine. I couldn’t renovate my carpentry as planned, and had to work for a daily wage that was barely enough to meet my family’s basic needs at a friend’s carpentry, instead.

The Israeli closure worsened and things went downhill from there. Carpentries across the Gaza Strip closed down due to a severe shortage of wood supply. My five brothers and I found ourselves in a position where we had to share a small street restaurant business. The revenues were anything but sufficient, so I had to put the remaining carpentry tools and equipment I had into use and start my own workshop. I accepted every order I received no matter how cheap it was. I had no other choice.

My brothers’ families and mine are once again hit by another crisis as the Ministry of Interior imposed the pandemic-induced curfew on 24 August 2020. All businesses, and notably street restaurants, were ordered to shut down, leaving us without any source of income. Three weeks into the lockdown, we have used up all the stored restaurant food.  We had been struggling to make ends meet even before the pandemic started, so now I just don’t know what to do. We are heavily indebted to the nearby grocery store to the point that the owner won’t let us shop there anymore.

My heart is aching talking to you about all of this. It’s a sad reality we live in. I can’t say much more, but I call on all competent authorities to support those who lost their means of subsistence due to the pandemic.”

Lockdown shatters Gazans’ dream to escape poverty

Yusri, a 21-year-old street vendor and his family’s sole breadwinner, spoke to Al Mezan about the pandemic’s impact on his life:

“I’m the oldest son and main breadwinner in a family of six, four of whom are children. It hasn’t always been like this; my father used to work for a water trucking vendor until he had to quit three years ago due to health complications following two back surgeries. Being the oldest son, I had to step in and prioritize looking for a job over going to college to provide for my family. So far, I have worked as a taxi driver, sold vegetables in a grocery store, and worked in a window-installation  shop. None of these jobs was well-paying. I barely made 20 shekels by the end of the day, which was not enough to cover my family’s needs.

Almost two years ago, however, I started selling clothes from a street stand in Sheikh Radwan neighborhood. I sold undergarments, baby clothes and accessories, and was slowly gaining a good reputation and attracting customers. I was able to make around 40 to 70 shekels on a regular day and more than 150 in holiday seasons. The income was relatively sufficient; we lived on a budget but we didn’t have to borrow money from anyone. Personally, I’ve always focused on work mainly, and never needed much pocket money since I’m not a smoker, and I don’t go out often. All I ever aspired to is having my own store for clothes and accessories.

With strong enthusiasm and perseverance, I started saving up for my dream clothing store. I remember staying up for nights just planning and thinking about the interior design I’d pick, the marketing approach I should use, and how this project would secure a more decent life for my family.

The lockdown and imposed curfew following the detection of the first coronavirus cases in Gaza hit me and everyone like a storm. The neighborhood I live in was designated as an endemic area so I have been confined to my home without any source of income. I initially thought it would only last for a few days, but it’s been three weeks so far, and my savings are almost depleted. I only have 400 shekels left out of the 2,800. If this crisis continues, I will most likely go into debt. My dream is out of reach now, and I might even lose my street stand to pay off any debts. It’s painful to see my only support system, my family, cut down on food like red meat and chicken to help me with expenses. I have no idea what would happen. This situation left me depressed and overthinking all the time.”

Poor and low-income families in Gaza: if coronavirus does not kill us, hunger probably will

Thaer, a 38-year-old father of two children from Khan Younis, spoke to Al Mezan about his longstanding struggle to secure a job despite having earned a diploma in programing and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from University College of Applied Sciences - Gaza in 2010, and how the pandemic is threatening his means of subsistence:

“Ever since I graduated, I have been trying in vain to land a permanent job. I have worked part time here and there to provide for my family, and eventually decided to start my own business. Almost two years ago, I invested the little savings I had in setting up a street stall for selling hot drinks near an organization called Emaar For Development and Rehabilitation in al-Amal neighborhood, Khan Younis. I haven’t made much money in the beginning, but the revenue was slowly increasing and enough to cover my family’s minimum needs. Meanwhile, I continued to look for job opportunities.

When schools and institutions were shut down earlier this year to curb the potential spread of COVID-19 (in Gaza), my work at the stall was drastically affected. Even though I used to make a minute amount of money, it was still better than nothing.

In the beginning of August, however, I regained some hope when schools reopened because it would vitalize the economy, but my excitement was short lived as the authorities launched another lockdown towards the end of the month when the first coronavirus cases were detected outside quarantine centers. With the curfew imposed, I have stopped working completely and have been confined at home for the last three weeks. This has put me and my family in extreme hardship; I’ve gone into debt trying to provide food, medication, cooking gas, and other essentials for my family. The house is completely empty, and I’ve become penniless. I don’t know if anyone will agree to lend me money any longer. My acquaintances have been helpful, but the pandemic is affecting them as well. I pray for this crisis to be over soon, or else my family would starve to death.”

Self-isolation compounds poor Gazans’ need for urgent help during the pandemic

A Palestinian father from North Gaza, whose family has been in home isolation for COVID-19, spoke to Al Mezan about the increasing hardship he faces due to the pandemic:

“I’m the primary provider for a family of 14. We have been living on a monthly salary of 1,000 Shekels. My wife recently landed a job as a cleaner at the Indonesian Hospital, where she works in alternating 14-day shifts, so I parent our children alone most of the time.

On Saturday, 29 August 2020, my son Hatem hurt his head while playing at home. I took him to the nearby pharmacy first but was advised to go to hospital instead because he had cut his head so badly he needed stitches, so we went to Al-Awda Hospital. I couldn’t afford the 25-shekel fees there, so we ended up receiving the treatment Hatem needed at the Indonesian Hospital, where my wife works, then we walked back home.

When I arrived, my daughter Israa, 22, told me she was is severe pain. She had been in pain for days and was having difficulty breathing in addition to Influenza-like symptoms. I bought an over-the-counter medication from the pharmacy and served her lemonade and hot drinks. Having been outside for most of the day, I was too exhausted, so I asked my other daughter Islam, 16, to accompany Israa to the hospital. I was absolutely clueless about the severity of her condition, and had I known she would test positive for coronavirus and be taken to a quarantine facility, I would have taken her to the hospital myself (the father bursts into tears). Israa’s health deteriorated and was later transferred to Gaza European Hospital, and we have maintained contact with her through phone calls since then.

A group of police officers showed up at our house and asked us to stay there until healthcare workers collected samples from the entire family on Thursday. We received the devastating news that my children, Islam, 16, Ghada, 13, Janat, 8, Baraa, 19, Tawfik, 26, Mohammed, 24, and I have all been infected when the test results came back positive on Saturday evening, 5 September 2020.

We have been confined at home since then. Relatives and neighbors are the only support we have now. My sister sends us bread every day, and my neighbor, who’s a doctor, is helping me manage a rash that spread on my hand, knowing that I suffer from hypertension. I can’t afford supplements or other drugs that might ease our symptoms, and I have been sharing the only painkillers we had at home with my children. We have received one food basket so far and have been trying in vain to contact the Ministry of Agriculture, who offered to help home-isolated families like mine.”
